"Block the Bully"
The power of our program rests in the dedication of the entire staff. Each month, two members of the character education committee plan a lesson centered around an Anti-Bullying Theme. Some of our themes have focused on students becoming Upstanders instead of Bystanders, understanding the power of words, that friends can sometimes bully and proactive steps they can take in avoiding possible bully situations. The lesson is taught to the staff by those who planned it. The date and time are set and when it comes time for a Block the Bully lesson, the Principal announces it over the PA system. All teachers and all students are engaged in the lesson at the exact same time! The lessons are often differentiated so activities differ for 3rd and 4th graders compared to 5th and 6th graders. The students are actively involved and have become excited for these lessons. The parents and community have supported this initiative and it has been featured on NJTV. We have shared the idea with other districts. This is truly a promising practice that should be shared across the country. It focuses on Anti-Bullying, but also the importance of Character Education!
