Hug, High Five, or Handshake
At Ross, we believe the way a student begins his or her day can set the tone for the entire day. Therefore, we make sure five teachers or administrators are outside opening car doors with a smile and greeting students as they step off of the bus, or welcoming those students arriving on bike or foot. More staff members are waiting at the entry door of our building to continue to share a smile or friendly greeting. As students walk the hallways to their classrooms, they are greeted by more staff stationed throughout the school. Finally, classroom teachers are committed to standing at their doorways and offering each arriving student the option of a hug, high-five, or handshake. We complete our welcoming activities with student-led announcements, students raising the American flag in front of the building, and finally participating in class meetings in each room. The hug, high five, and handshake is an investment in the well-being of our students and the success of their day. Another benefit is that it is a wonderful way for each staff member to start the day as well.
