Advisory: Educating, Nurturing and Empowering Young Leaders
Salam School's commitment to character building is school-wide using a comprehensive and intentional approach to prepare students for challenges and opportunities that define positive behavior. Character education is integrated into every aspect of the school culture, both in academics and the hidden curriculum. All stakeholders share in the character education initiative in Salam School. Advisory is a practice that has been incorporated school-wide with great results. Each homeroom forms an Advisory team with a team name and a team logo and two staff advisory. During Advisory, students in all grades discuss core values, life and social skills. Each Advisory team is assigned a school hallway bulletin board which is decorated each month and reflects the character education activities the team engages in during the month with student created messages and artwork. They represent the students' understanding of the core values, social skills and behaviors that are taught. Students do presentations and projects. Student character is monitored and assessed by observing manifestation of core values through behaviors, and students' commitment to uphold the values under various circumstances.
