Wii Play Program: Contemporary Social Skills
A strong character education program is infused throughout the school day. We look for opportunities to blend Character Education with counseling experiences for the children. This grant program pairs students with strong social skills with a younger student that is learning social skills. In the Wii Play Program students work together to play the Wii interactive gaming system. Often, when the students work together on an activity that they are familiar with, their confidence is higher, which opens the door for building skills in areas where they are less confident. This program focuses on building the skills of social language, sportsmanship, frustration tolerance, confidence, and having fun without making fun. The Wii Play Program is voluntary for all participants. Children in grades 3 and 4 are eligible to sign up to learn about social skills. Students in grade 5 are eligible to be mentors; they are invited based on staff recommendation. Although each group is supervised by the counselor, it is the 5th grade mentors that lead the program.
