Reading Rocks!
Alternative high school students prepare presentations for elementary students focused around a particular book that is read to the younger students. The high school students further enhance the presentation by including a visual representation in the form of a slideshow and reading-area decorations. Several rooms are decorated in different motifs to match the books that are being read to the elementary students. To add a bit more excitement, the high school students will often dress in character of the book they are reading. The young participants will rotate into different rooms to experience the environment that has been created for them. The books are selected for their value in promoting the character traits that have been selected by the school district as being invaluable for future success. These character traits are emphasized during pre-reading and post-reading activities. As a bonus, the elementary student will leave with a memento in which to remember their experience and serve as a constant reminder of their need to exhibit good character.
