RHS Connections - A Freshman Transition Program
Freshmen students participate in small group discussions where topics such as bullying, dating, academic success, school involvement, individual needs, etc. are explored. Freshmen take part in mini-sessions where the topics of bullying, dating violence, boundaries, stereotyping, dating, and stress management will be explored. Freshmen break boundaries that can hinder their school experience and develop team- building skills through a variety of large-group activities. Freshmen fill out an on-line "Facebook" page to introduce themselves as well as an RTI computer form about their multiple intellegences and Five Love Languages, so teachers and staff can get to know them. Freshmen are led through self-reflection practices and implement their new found knowledge in their own lives through journaling and active discussion. Upperclass mentors foster long-term relationships with freshmen that are developed throughout Freshman Connections activities, particularly the one day retreats. A community of learners are developed through the connections made and the relationships built at the retreat and other Freshman Connections activities. We utilize a blog and a Twitter account.
