Celebrating Our Planet
This project developed from an Eagle Scout who volunteered to refurbish our nature trails and build an outdoor classroom. This led to our teachers forming a "Go Green Committee" to help raise awareness of our trails, outdoor classroom, and the potential for developing integrated learning experiences. As students saw the trails come back to life, a group approached the principal and asked to form a student "Green Committee." The teacher committee supervised the student committee. Together they planned a "Party for the Planet" celebration to highlight our newly refurbished trails. However, this developed into much more than a display of our trails. Community agencies came to this event and set up informational booths for parents, students, and teachers. Activities such as making biodegradable bird feeders were set up for the students. In total the event was attended by over 500 people from the school and community. Over this past year, both committees have expanded and we now have sustainable vegetable gardens and a large digital recycling program. All of our students are learning to work together to care for our environment. It is truly SECD in action.
