Championing Change
Students choose an issue for which they have great concern and/or interest or that has affected them personally. They decide how they will make this relevant to various people so others have a vested interest. This means they may need to tell a personal story, include researched facts, have pictures that could move people to action, and/or tell how it concerns all. Once they have chosen their issue and decided why others should care, they plan their project. The key is discovering an original idea to draw people in and educate them about their focus. They decide who it will involve, what they will do, how they will do it, when it will be done, and why it is important. Students are encouraged to think about the logistics, the materials, the manpower, and the promotion of their idea. They develop a creative name for their service project and a logo. Finally, they develop a proposal presentation and present it to the class. The class discusses ideas and shares input. Students are then encouraged to begin work implementing their ideas.
