HawkPAL's Transition Program
Valley Park Middle School's HawkPALs (Peer Advocate Leaders) program is a transition program for all new 6th grade students. This program offers a multi-faceted approach to allow for a smooth, stress-free introduction to middle school for both students and parents. Each year, a core group of 8th grade students become our Hawk PALs. The main goal of this group is to help 5th graders manage their transition to middle school. Before the end of 5th grade, these students will have met with our HawkPALs multiple times by participating in 5th Grade Play night, a school tour, and a discussion on what to expect in middle school. During the summer, the HawkPALs plan an orientation experience prior to the start of the new school year. In 6th grade, students continue to meet with their HawkPALs to develop a strong buddy relationship, and our 8th graders work to encourage and promote our character traits and the caring community that makes Valley Park Middle School special. The 8th graders become mentors for those younger 6th graders, in both social and academic settings. By continuing to promote this relationship, our 6th graders begin their new school year on a very positive note.
