Westhaven School Student Led Bullying-Free Club
As part of a greater initiative to implement student-led ideas, the Westhaven School Student-Led Bully-Free Club came into existence. A group of fifth grade students got things started by meeting with the principal and other members of the Character Education committee to suggest a bully-free club that is run and led by our Westhaven students. With minimal guidance and facilitation by our staff members, the students' idea began to take root. Today, there are "bully-free" boxes located throughout the school where students can submit concerns they have regarding bullying. After submitting a form, the club works with classroom teachers to arrange times to meet with these students and discuss what is occurring. The club then works with those students to help develop coping skills and problem solving strategies to combat the bullying problems. After less than a year in existence, students are reporting a great decrease in our incidents of bullying, and a great deal of that can be attributed to our Westhaven School Student Led Bully-Free Club. What a great thing these young leaders have created!
