What’s Cool about Middle School?

In order to help incoming students enter middle school with confidence, Pacific Hills School offers a two-week summer program called What’s Cool about Middle School? The all-day program runs twice during the summer and is open to any student entering fifth through eighth grade. The program is centered around character-based themes such as responsibility, behavior, and fairness. Students explore these character issues through discussions, team-building activities, and afternoon field trips. Each morning begins with a “morning warm-up” game, followed by a “news report” discussion of current events. During these activities, students build their confidence and learn to support one another. Next, students participate in an activity related to the day’s character theme, followed by a lesson which imparts skills that will help them succeed in middle school. After lunch, students take field trips, where the day’s theme is put into action. Examples include visits to the Museum of Tolerance on “fairness” day and Dodger Stadium for a lesson on teamwork. Each day ends with a wrap-up discussion. Students who complete the program report feeling less stressed about entering middle school.
