Whatever you do, do it consistently and make it a school-wide effort. Look for opportunities to immerse and embed character in all key activities.
Gail M. Gilbert, Former Principal

Building good character is clearly the prime mission of Skyview Elementary, located about an hour and a half from Atlanta, and the evidence is everywhere. Each hallway is named for a character trait (Perseverance Parkway, Character Commons, or Compassion Cove) and filled with student artwork. A “Giving Garden” between two hallways provides students and classes a calm retreat. Students share responsibility for maintaining the garden.  Even the cafeteria reflects the caring environment of the school.  Two students from each class leave for their lunch shift early in order to serve as hosts and hostesses for their tables. They place napkins and forks on the tables and then make sure everyone cleans up at the end of lunch. Obtaining this leadership from students has enabled the school to assign only one staff member to cafeteria. But the school’s excellence extends way beyond appearances. Character education is reflected throughout the curriculum. Even the youngest students seem to understand what good character looks like.
