State sponsors from 30 states give State Schools of Character (SSOC) awards as a prerequisite to the National Schools of Character (NSOC) award. State winners receive these awards at a state celebration in their honor. Some states give certificates, some give banners. Some have site visits, most do not. Some celebrate at the school level with the student body participating. Others hold their celebrations at state houses or historic sites, during conferences, and even at TV stations and national sporting events. SSOC serve as models within their states where they share best practices and develop a state-level mentoring network. CEP honors SSOC winners in its annual NSOC book. CEP and state sponsors also honor SSOC winners on their websites. Beginning in 2011, SSOC winners will hold their designation for three years. Being an SSOC winner qualifies an applicant to be considered for the NSOC award. State sponsors offer technical assistance or guide applicants to helpful resources so that SSOC winners can reach the goal of becoming a National School or District of Character.
