Secretary of Education Arnie Duncan and Peter Yarrow

Peter Yarrow (of “Peter, Paul and Mary” fame) led a sing-along for the Secretary of  Education at a recent meeting. Yarrow is a key leader of United Voices for Education (UVE), a consortium of 50 educational organizations that support whole child education.

CEP Executive Director Joe Mazzola was among attendees at a UVE meeting with US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. Mazzola said the group asked that the Secretary’s policies and budgeting reflect a commitment to whole child education. The Secretary stressed the administration’s commitment to education. Secretary Duncan said the federal government is committing unprecedented resources to support education.

Mazzola said, “I was impressed. The President’s strong, strong commitment to education is real and we will continue to see it shown in the form of resources.  Measurement and demonstrated success will be huge in deciding where to spend money and what to take to scale.”

The United Voices for Education plans an ongoing exchange of ideas with the Department of Education.
