Board Begins Search for New President/CEO

WASHINGTON, DC (January 17, 2020) – Character.org today announced the appointment of its Board Chair Arthur J. Schwartz as Acting CEO, succeeding Doug Karr who served as President and CEO since 2017. The Character.org Board of Directors has initiated a search to identify and recruit new leadership for the organization.

“For the past 25 years, it has been my honor to be involved in Character.org,” said Schwartz. “Sandy McDonnell, our founder, was a dear friend whose passion for character still touches my heart. We thank Doug for his leadership during the past three years and wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Dr. Schwartz recently retired as Professor of Leadership Studies and Founding Director of the Oskin Leadership Institute at Widener University. Previously, he served as Executive Vice President of the John Templeton Foundation and as Senior Scholar at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Schwartz earned his doctorate in Moral Development from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Established in 1993, Character.org is a national organization devoted to fostering character development in schools and communities. The organization provides leadership, advocacy, and resources to help educators, families, and individuals along their character journeys.
